Baled aluminium cans at Garratt's Metals

Cans & small quantities

Aluminium can recycling

Drinks cans are worth money as aluminium, so a collection at a school, pub, club or office can raise real funds instead of going in the general bin.

You do not need a lorry-load to come and see us. Cans are weighed on the same approved scales as everything else and paid at the going rate for aluminium.

Who this suits

Schools and colleges running an eco or fundraising project; pubs, clubs and sports grounds getting through cans every week; offices with a can bin by the kitchen; scout and guide groups, churches and charities collecting for funds. If your collection has grown too big for the boot of a car, tell us and we will talk about a bin on site instead.

How to prepare them

Empty and reasonably dry is all we ask. Crushing them saves you space but makes no difference to the weight. Please keep steel food tins separate from aluminium drinks cans — a magnet tells you which is which, as it sticks to steel and not to aluminium. Bags or bulk sacks are easier to handle than loose cans.

What you will be paid

Aluminium moves with the market, so we do not publish a rate. Ring the yard on 01270 611447 before you come and we will tell you what we are paying today, and roughly what a sack or a bin of cans is likely to weigh.

Paying a school or charity

Payment is by bank transfer, never cash, so bring the account details for the school, club or charity fund and the name of the person authorised to receive it. Whoever brings the cans in will also need photo ID and proof of address, as they would with any scrap metal.

Good to know

Aluminium can recycling — questions we get asked

Is there a minimum quantity of cans?

No. Bring what you have collected — a few sacks is fine, and if the collection grows we can talk about a bin on site instead.

Do the cans need washing or crushing?

No. Empty and reasonably dry is enough. Crushing saves you space but makes no difference to the weight you are paid on.

How do you pay a school, club or charity?

By bank transfer into the school, club or charity account — the law does not allow cash for scrap metal. Bring the account details and photo ID for whoever is bringing the cans in.

How much will you pay for my scrap metal?

Scrap prices move daily with the metal markets, so we do not publish rates. Ring the yard on 01270 611447 and we will tell you exactly what we are paying today for what you have.

Not sure what your scrap is worth?

Prices move daily. Give us a ring and we'll tell you what we're paying today — no obligation, no nonsense.
