Garratt's Metals has been an industrial dismantler as well as a scrap merchant from the start. Much of our work comes from the major railway companies, the engineering industry and the farming community — jobs where the metal has to be cut down safely where it stands before anything can be moved.
Railway rolling stock
We dismantle passenger carriages, locomotives and goods wagons, and have built up steady work with the major railway companies over the years. Rolling stock is stripped, cut and separated into grades, with the non-ferrous content recovered properly rather than lost into the steel.
Steel-framed buildings
Portal-framed units, workshops, grain stores and agricultural sheds are regular work. We take the cladding and sheeting off, drop the frame in a controlled sequence, then clear the base so the site is left usable. Because the steel is recycled through our own yard, its value comes straight back into the price you are quoted.
Heavy engineering machinery and plant
Presses, lathes, production lines, boiler houses, tanks and silos — machinery that is too heavy or too awkward to move whole is cut down in place and taken out in road-legal loads. We plan lifting, access and services before anything is touched.
Mobile 40-tonne Euromech shear
Dismantling is carried out with our mobile 40-tonne Euromech shear, which brings a 500-tonne cutting force to your site. Heavy sections, beams, axles and thick-walled pipework can be cut where they stand instead of being craned out in one piece — quicker, safer and considerably cheaper. Back at Nantwich the Harris 800-tonne shear finishes the job.
Farm and agricultural dismantling
The farming community has been a core part of our work for decades. We take down redundant barns, sheds and grain stores, clear old implements, ploughs, trailers and combines, and remove tanks, feed bins and scrap machinery from farmyards across Cheshire and the borders. Ring the yard and we will come and look at what you have.
Getting a price
Dismantling is never priced off a photograph alone. Call the yard and we will arrange to visit, look at access, services and what can be recovered, then come back with a considered price and a programme that fits around your operation.

Tell us what you have
Ring the yard on 01270 611447 or send the details through the form — a photo helps us judge it quickly.
- 02
We quote you honestly
We tell you what we are paying today for that grade, and whether it is worth us collecting or better brought in.
- 03
Collection or drop-off
We collect with our own lorries and grab loaders, or you turn up in opening hours and we help you unload.
- 04
Weighed, graded and paid
Your load is weighed on approved scales and paid straight into your bank — no cash, as the law requires.

Good to know
Industrial dismantling — questions we get asked
Do you dismantle railway rolling stock?
Yes. We dismantle passenger carriages, locomotives and goods wagons, and have worked for the major railway companies for many years. Rolling stock is cut down and processed through our own yard.
Can you cut heavy steel on our site?
Yes. Alongside the Harris 800-tonne shear at Nantwich we run a mobile 40-tonne Euromech shear with a 500-tonne cutting force, so heavy sections can be cut where they stand and moved out in road-legal loads.
Can you take down a steel-framed building or farm shed?
Yes — steel-framed portal buildings, grain stores, barns and sheds are regular work for us. We dismantle the frame, clear the site and recycle the steel and non-ferrous ourselves.
How much will you pay for my scrap metal?
Scrap prices move daily with the metal markets, so we do not publish rates. Ring the yard on 01270 611447 and we will tell you exactly what we are paying today for what you have.
Not sure what your scrap is worth?
Prices move daily. Give us a ring and we'll tell you what we're paying today — no obligation, no nonsense.
