Grab loader handling scrap in the yard

Health & safety

Site safety

This is a working yard with heavy plant moving all day. Nobody has ever minded being asked to wait a moment — please follow the signs and the directions of our staff.

Visiting the yard

When you arrive

  • Stop at the entrance and wait to be directed — do not drive into the yard unaccompanied
  • Follow the marked route and keep to walking pace
  • Stay with your vehicle unless a member of staff asks you to move
  • Keep clear of the grab loaders, shears and lorries at all times — the operators cannot always see you
  • High-visibility clothing and sturdy footwear are sensible; sandals and shorts are not
  • Children must stay in the vehicle, and please leave dogs at home
  • No smoking anywhere on site

Unloading

Handling your own load

Our staff will tell you where to unload and will help with anything heavy or awkward. Please do not climb into skips, containers or onto stacks of metal. Sharp edges, swarf and broken glass are part of the job here, so take care what you pick up bare-handed.

Skips

Loading a skip safely

Please keep the load level with the top rail. Our drivers cannot lift a skip that is heaped above the sides, and an overloaded skip is a hazard on the road. Fridges, freezers, tyres, gas bottles, asbestos, paint, oils, chemicals, batteries and electrical items must be kept out — tell us if any of those are on site and we will advise on the right route for them.

See also our guide to choosing the right skip size.

Collections and site work

Before we come to you

Tell us about anything that affects a safe lift: overhead cables, low branches, soft ground, narrow gateways, weight limits, live services, or asbestos in a building we are dismantling. On demolition and dismantling work we produce the method statements and risk assessments for the job and our operatives work to them.
