Questions

Frequently asked questions

Everything we get asked on the phone, grouped by the sort of job it applies to. If your question is not here, ring the yard — we would rather explain it than have you guess.

The basics

How much will you pay for my scrap metal?

Scrap prices move daily with the metal markets, so we do not publish rates. Ring the yard on 01270 611447 and we will tell you exactly what we are paying today for what you have.

Do I need to book before bringing scrap in?

No. Domestic customers are welcome to turn up during opening hours — Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 9:00am to 12:30pm. We are at Windy Arbour, Alvaston Business Park, Nantwich, Cheshire CW5 6PF.

Do I need to bring ID?

Yes. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 we have to record the identity of everyone who sells us scrap metal, so please bring photo ID such as a driving licence or passport, along with proof of your address.

Do you pay cash?

No — the law does not allow scrap metal dealers in England and Wales to pay cash. We pay by bank transfer, so bring your bank details with you.

Do you collect, or do I have to deliver it?

Both. You are welcome to bring scrap to the yard, and for larger loads we can collect with our own lorries and grab loaders across South Cheshire, North Staffordshire and North Shropshire.

Is there a minimum load for collection?

It depends on the metal and how far away you are — a small load of copper is worth collecting when a small load of light steel may not be. Give us a ring on 01270 611447 and we will tell you honestly.

How is my scrap weighed?

Everything is weighed on site on approved scales and sorted by grade, so you can see exactly what you have brought in and what it is being paid as.

Can you take scrap cars?

Yes. We collect end-of-life vehicles and de-pollute them properly as an Environment Agency compliant facility. Bring the V5C log book if you have it.

What metals do you buy?

All grades of ferrous steel and cast iron, plus non-ferrous metals including copper, brass, gun metal, aluminium, lead, stainless steel, radiators, cable and aluminium cans.

Do you take fridges, gas bottles or anything hazardous?

Some items need special handling and some we cannot take at all. Please ring the yard on 01270 611447 before you load up so we can tell you what is possible.

Collections and commercial work

What size bins and containers can you supply?

From small stillages and bins for cable and non-ferrous through to open containers for steel and mixed metal. We size them to your space and how much metal you generate.

How often do you empty them?

On whatever pattern suits you — a set schedule, or simply when you ring to say it is full.

Is it worth separating the metals?

Yes, materially. Separate containers for steel, stainless, aluminium, copper and cable pay better than one mixed bin, because mixed metal has to be graded down.

Farms and land

Can you get a lorry down our farm track?

Usually, yes — we work off farms every week and use our own grab loaders and lorries. Tell us about gateways, soft ground, low branches and turning space when you ring and we will send something that fits, or plan the job over more than one visit.

Will you take old tractors and implements that are seized up?

Yes. Redundant tractors, balers, ploughs, trailers and other implements are normal work for us, whether they roll or not.

Do you clear farm buildings as well as loose scrap?

Yes. Grain stores, barns, portal-frame sheds and dairy buildings are dismantling work rather than collection, and we do that with our own plant including a mobile 40-tonne Euromech shear.

Cable, cans and smaller loads

Should I strip the cable before bringing it in?

On heavy, clean single-core cable stripping can be worth the time. On thin flex it rarely covers the effort. Never burn cable — it is illegal, dangerous and ruins the copper. Bring it as it is if you are unsure and we will grade it fairly.

How is cable priced?

On recoverable copper, not just total weight, so insulation thickness and any steel armour matter. We separate the grades out rather than paying everything at the lowest rate, and we will explain how your load has been graded.

Do you buy aluminium-cored cable?

Yes, though it is worth considerably less than copper-cored cable. If you are not sure which you have, bring it in and we will tell you.

Is there a minimum quantity of cans?

No. Bring what you have collected — a few sacks is fine, and if the collection grows we can talk about a bin on site instead.

Do the cans need washing or crushing?

No. Empty and reasonably dry is enough. Crushing saves you space but makes no difference to the weight you are paid on.

How do you pay a school, club or charity?

By bank transfer into the school, club or charity account — the law does not allow cash for scrap metal. Bring the account details and photo ID for whoever is bringing the cans in.
