This is the question we are asked most often on the phone. The short answer: photo ID and proof of your address, every visit, for everybody. Here is the detail.
Photo identification
A UK photocard driving licence or a passport is ideal. A national identity card from an EEA country or a biometric residence permit is also normally acceptable. It has to be current and it has to be the original — a photo on your phone is not enough.
Proof of address
Something recent with your name and address on it: a utility bill, council tax bill, bank or building society statement. If your driving licence already shows your current address, that usually covers both requirements in one document.
Why it is needed every time
The law requires the dealer to verify identity for each transaction, not once when you first appear. Regular customers get through it quickly, but the check still happens.
Selling on behalf of a business, club or charity
Bring your own ID as the person handing the metal over, plus the bank details of the organisation being paid and something showing you are authorised to act for it. We cannot pay an organisation's money into a personal account.
If you have not got the documents
We cannot buy from you without them — that is not us being difficult, it is a licence condition. Ring us on 01270 611447 before you load up and we will tell you exactly what will be accepted so you are not making the trip twice.
